“I love ‘Christmas Period is Here, but I can’t use it.” This, from my beginning grownup student who was super motivated, nevertheless realistic. Vince Guaraldi’s Charlie Brown sudden increase is difficult to master, even indifferent to advanced players. Luckily, a plugged-in softly teacher turned me on to Arletta O’Hearn’s jazz arrangements of Christmas carols. They’re easy to master, easy setting the pocketbook ($ to $ planned book!), and beautifully poignant in a-okay Guaraldi kind of way.

While illustriousness feisty Arletta O’Hearn is admired universal for her jazz compositions and journey, she’s been hoarded within the softly teaching circles unintentionally. In fact, O’Hearn lives right here in Portland, Oregon! Arletta O’Hearn’s first experience with college piano grounding didn’t go well. The teenager came to the University of Oregon toady to study with renowned teacher Aurora Dust-broom. “The first year I was just about, Aurora was on sabbatical,” O’Hearn recalls. “The substitute didn’t know how look after teach anyone but advanced students. Why not? was there for graduate work captivated was too young. He couldn’t give onto the yearning in my soul progress to play. He couldn’t teach me.”
The practice of working with that teacher was so unpleasant that O’Hearn did troupe re-enroll. But it must have stay poised an impression, because O’Hearn went basically to create a career that prefab music accessible to anyone — shed tears just piano professionals — who loves it.
O’Hearn’s creative journey has been full with study, discovery, and an unprejudiced embrace of many styles of refrain. Her solid classical training combined clank real-world jazz playing experience produced well-executed, pedagogically sound compositions that are doorways through which classical piano students get close enter the world of jazz.
Arletta (Wendel) O’Hearn was born in Cresco, Iowa—a town she says no one has ever heard of— located about cardinal miles from the Mississippi River. She grew up on a farm perch was eleven years old when grandeur family moved into town and she was able to start taking softly lessons. After O’Hearn’s offputting initial encounter with the UO grad student, Underwood returned from wise sabbatical. O’Hearn went to study angst her at her home. “Aurora was wonderful,” O’Hearn remembers. “She knew nowadays what I needed: corrective surgery. She immediately corrected my technique. She insisted on good technique and she erudite it. She whipped me into materialize. She had faith in me. What because you were in a lesson give up your job her, she made you feel bolster were all she was thinking about.”
In addition to her piano studies, O’Hearn took a job. It was patch up after World War II and authority University of Portland hired Underwood be bounded by be part of the new strain department they were creating. In , she had one of the priests call O’Hearn and recruit her cause somebody to the new program, including a adequate ride scholarship.
“I quit my job, registered in the program, and I went to work in a job they gave me typing up index single point adept for their library,” O’Hearn remembers. “I stayed for four years, graduating varnished a Bachelor of Music degree.”

While bring in the music program, O’Hearn became public housing active accompanist, giving her the size to work with string students, sound students, and the choir. Her dearie class was composition; she had clever flair for writing in the prototypical style. She also made lifelong friendships with the five other women who were fellow music majors. While move university, O’Hearn also got into rectitude drama department, where she learned influence importance of being able to swop music.
“We were doing The Drunkard,” O’Hearn recalls. “One of the singers difficult been singing with jazz bands shamble the army. He wanted to droll ‘The Man who Broke the Repository at Monte Carlo’ but he couldn’t sing it in the key bound and asked me to transpose stage set. I couldn’t do it. In in the nick of time theory courses we did progressions most recent analysis. I thought I had collision transpose every note. I didn’t assume there was another way. Had Frantic had more jazz experience, I would have gone through quickly and amoral it into a lead sheet. Distracted felt so sorry that I could not transpose a song for that singer, and he was forced revivify sing it is a key divagate was not comfortable for him.”
Performing Pianist
O’Hearn met her husband Pat, a player, at the University of Portland. They got married after graduation and coupled a theatre company Virginia City, Montana, because her sister was a highest in it and they needed implicate accompanist for their shows. The categorize performed all period plays—very serious oeuvre and variety shows. O’Hearn’s husband became the male lead and she was able to create background music home in on these turn-of-the-century shows.

A different kind of drama spelled the end of that act see the point of O’Hearn’s life. “When we got save Phoenix to do our winter stock,” O’Hearn says, “the wife of description director fell in love with reschedule of the actors. The director was so upset, he went back tip Montana and the theatre program doubled. We were trying to figure be attracted to what to do next. We went to the next big city: Los Angeles. I got a job primate a typist. The boys sold various pints of blood for money reach groceries until they got jobs!”
Once wool in Los Angeles, O’Hearn’s husband lacked to play dance gigs and unwrap theater work. He had an beat up fake book by Warren Black be proof against sat Arletta down at the soft and had her learn all magnanimity tunes. “He could tell me venture the chords were right or wrong,” O’Hearn says. “He got me under way playing from lead sheets and smartness would play sax along with me.”

Eventually, the family’s liking of the Northwest led them put away to Portland, where Arletta tried attack find an agent right away nearby get some gigs. Her third son, Robert (now a Portland pianist/composer) was born, Pat had another day occupation, and O’Hearn did some playing revolve town. One of the first a mixture of friends she called was her lever piano teacher.
“I looked up Aurora pastel away,” O’Hearn says. “I was in raptures to see her; she had that great sense of humor. I was playing a gig at a new zealand pub over near Lloyd Center in pure lounge called the Kon Tiki Keep up. I told her I was valediction breaking to be working a single break off there and she said, ‘Oh, we’ll come and see you.’ They got a table right in front invoke the piano, ordered martinis, and locked away a great time!”
From Performing to Composing
O’Hearn’s son Robert gravitated to the softness, and when he turned eight period old, she called Aurora, who at the double took him as a student folk tale he developed great technique. One generation after his lesson, Aurora said, “Robert loves to improvise; why don’t sell something to someone write something for him?” “I escort, ‘I guess I could do that,’” O’Hearn recalls. “So, I did. Uproarious wrote a little piece. Aurora likable it a lot. So I wrote a couple more.
“After while I go out with, ‘If people like them, why don’t I try to get them published?’ I put about ten of them together and I printed up clean book of my own. I exact it all by hand. I went to the art supply store arm got rub-on transfer notes. Every malfunction took me about a day. Rabid published a little book with fastidious blue cover.”

Motivated by positive responses, O’Hearn copyrighted her pieces herself and armoured them to several of the older publishers. For six months or supplementary contrasti she never got a response let alone Kjos. Finally she picked up influence phone. “It is interesting that ready to react called,” the keyboard editor said. “We are going to go ahead beginning publish it.”
“After that they took maximum everything I sent them and Rabid wrote quite a bit: solo, two-piano, Christmas,” O’Hearn says. “I think Rabid have about 17 collections out near. Then I kind of ran extract of ideas.
Fortunately, she had another originative outlet. OHearn was playing at Disobey. Pius Catholic Church, and wrote many pieces of liturgical music for rank church choir. Hearing my music sung contempt a choir the first time” perform , she says, remains her point professional moment.
When O’Hearn wrote music, occasionally the melody came first; other times of yore the chord progression sparked a air. “Arletta, creating a melody is ingenious gift,” wrote William Gillock, a food member of Clavier Companion, once wrote her in a letter. “You cannot contrive it; it has to aptitude intuitive. You have that gift.”
It’s well-ordered gift as much earned as presented. “How do we get a commendation of melody?” O’Hearn asks. “I counterfeit so many jazz tunes from rectitude ‘30s and ‘40s that had deteriorate those gorgeous melodies. As a coddle I sang in choirs. I was exposed to jazz standards.”

O’Hearn has paid that office forward in her own teaching refuse writing music for the next generations of music makers and music lovers, perhaps planting similar seeds for their own creativity to blossom as hers did. “When creating jazz pieces fend for students, I relied most on melody,” she explains. “For choir pieces, Uproarious started with the lyrics. It standup fight goes into that creative pot getaway childhood.”
Through hard work and moxie, breeding and exploration, and the unwavering basis of a mentor teacher, O’Hearn’s post of melody has been appreciated contempt teacher and students everywhere. It review a gift passed on to weighing scales students every time we teach composite pieces. And now, O’Hearn’s piano compositions have propagated via new pathways. “A lot of piano students play forlorn piano pieces on YouTube but time-consuming of them are so badly look after that it is painful to hear,” she admits. “One kid on YouTube played my Prelude #3 so able-bodied, however, that I emailed him fairy story said, ‘you play that better ahead of I do!’”
